I LOVE to read and encourage others to read! So, to that end, I want to make a few recommendations for your Summer Reading List.

Christian Theology

Words of Life by Timothy Ward is a clear and concise work on the nature and necessity of Scripture will challenge you to take God’s Word serious. We cannot have too thorough of an understanding of Scripture as “the living and active Word of God.”

Biblical Theology

From Every People and Nation by Danny Hays is one of the most important books that I have ever read in my life. Not only is it an excellent example of biblical theology, but it is also exceedingly relevant for issues that the church is facing in the 21st century. I cannot commend this book enough!

Pastoral Ministry

Zach Eswine is one of the brightest and most helpful writers in evangelicalism. I return to this book on a regular basis. It is a salve to a weary soul in pastoral ministry. Sell whatever you need to sell to buy and read this book!

Biography

Memoirs of an Ordinary Pastor is written by D. A. Carson and reflects upon the life and ministry of his father, Tom Carson. This book will move you to tears while encouraging your faith in the faithfulness of God.

Ethics

God and the Transgender Debate was written by my dear friend, Andrew Walker. While I have written a lengthier review of this work for Themelios, which will be coming out in the next few months, in brief, I would encourage you to buy this book and share it with others. Andrew writes with grace and clarity on a complicated subject. He is a model for us all.

World Religions

In addition to teaching to OT and NT survey, I also teach a course on comparative religion from a Christian perspective at our local junior college. I can think of no better, user-friendly introduction to the topics of world religions than this work by Peter Kreeft.

Fiction

This is a classic that I read every year. In fact, I’ve already read this book once in 2018 and intend to revisit it again later this summer. It is a fictional masterpiece of wit and wisdom on the factual reality of spiritual warfare.
