My morning began with meditation on Psalm 37. The verses that stuck out to me most were verses 5-6: Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.
These verses appear in the context of a psalm that deals with fretting over “those who are evil.” It would seem that the fretting takes place in a context where the people of God observe the success of the wicked, especially when the righteous are suffering. Verse 7 makes this more clear, where David wrote, “Do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.”
At times, it will seem like following Christ as a member of the people of God is not the path to blessing, but actually the path to trouble in this world. Following Christ has always been temporarily costly in this world. As followers of Christ watch people either capitulate to the culture or abandon Christ altogether in order to “succeed” in this world, it is natural to imagine that many will fret. Yet, we have not been called to fret.
Instead, we have been called to commit our ways to the LORD. We can trust Him with our lives. He is worthy of our obedience. He will not lead us astray nor will He allow us to be put to shame. A vindication is coming for those who hope in God. For He will make our righteous reward shine like the dawn on that future day, even if for now, we live under a dark cloud.
