In Psalm 3:3, David described God as “the One who lifts my head high.” David declared this truth about God in the context of distress. According to verse 1, David felt that his foes had risen against him. They taunted David, saying, “God will not deliver him.” Yet David remembered that his God was the “One who lifts my head high.” What a name!
In commenting on this verse, Derek Kidner wrote, “The sense of lifter of my head is well conveyed by NEB ‘thou dost raise my head high’, in glorious contrast to the picture of dejection (but also of supplication) in 2 Samuel 15:30, ‘weeping …, barefoot and with his head covered’.” David is thus expressing confidence in the nature of God even in the midst of his trouble, as he fled from his son Absalom.
Like David, we would do well to remember who our God is when we face our foes. As David would go on to write in verse 4, “I call out to the LORD, and He answers me from His holy mountain.” Not only does He lift our heads, but He hears our prayers.
For those who have placed their trust in the LORD Jesus Christ, what was true for David in Psalm 3:3 is true for you today. We do not have to fear. As children of God through faith, when we face trials and opposition, we can be sure that God is with us. He will never leave us nor will He forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He is still the lifter of heads. You can trust Him today.
