If you woke this morning to find out that the wealthiest person in the world had willingly linked your bank account to their wealth, how might that change your day? For those who are in Christ, something even greater than this has occurred.
In Ephesians 3:8-9, the apostle Paul writes, “Although I am less than the least of all God’s people, this grace was given to me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administrations of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.”
In other words, Paul was called to make known the availability of the “unsearchable riches of Christ” to the Gentiles.
When Paul speaks of the “unsearchable riches of Christ,” I believe he has in mind the plan of God to incorporate Gentiles like me into the people of God by means of Christ. This means that I have not become a part of the people of God by my self-effort, but rather, by the grace and mercy of God in Christ. Like the rest of humanity, I was and am unable to do what God’s law requires of me. Yet, in the grace and mercy of God, Jesus, as the true Israel, the true Son of God, accomplished the perfect will of God, inaugurating a New Covenant with a New Kingdom under the rule of a New King. Having conquered sin, death, and hell in my place, Jesus was declared Lord over all. And, by faith in Christ, I am incorporated into the fullness of His victory for the purpose of bringing Him glory in the church (Eph. 3:10-21).
Because of Jesus’ work on my behalf, who suffered the penalty of my sin and rebellion, bringing peace between God and me, I am now able to “approach God with freedom and confidence” (Eph. 3:13). I, “who was once far off, have been brought near through the blood of Christ” (Eph. 2:13). I have access to God himself!
And that reality is not a dream or a fantasy like the one I described at the start of this post. While we may not wake up and find our bank accounts linked to the richest person in the world, if we are in Christ, we have something far better! We have the ability and right in Christ to approach God with freedom and confidence! This is a blood-bought privilege that belongs to all who have placed their trust in Christ.
Do not squander this privilege today. Approach your God today in freedom and confidence. He “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us!” (Eph. 3:20).
