I love the doctrine of Union with Christ. For me, it is a theological linchpin. If you pull it out, everything else falls apart. So for Theology Thursday, I wanted to share just a few quotes from other theologians on Union with Christ.
From John Murray:
Nothing is more central or basic than union and communion with Christ… for it underlies every step of the application of redemption. Union with Christ is really the central truth of the whole doctrine of redemption. Union with Christ is really the central truth of the whole doctrine of salvation not only in its application but also in its once-for-all accomplishment in the finished work of Christ. Indeed the whole process of salvation has its origin in one phase of union with Christ and salvation has in view the realization of other phases of union with Christ.
From Todd Billings:
Union with Christ is theological shorthand for the gospel itself – a key image the pulls together numerous motifs in the biblical witness.
From Gerald Bray:
The belief that a Christian is seated in heavenly places with Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6), sharing with Him in the inner life of the Godhead, is the distinctive teaching of Evangelical Christianity… Without pride in our own tradition or prejudice against other forms of Christianity, we must surely proclaim that the experience of a personal relationship with God, sealed by the Spirit in the finished work of the Son from Whom He proceeds, is a deeper and more satisfying faith than any other known to man.
